I was told by a blog reader that Foo Hou Dim Sum in Menjalara serves “better dim sum” than my go-to spot in Puchong, so I made my way to check it out a couple of weeks back. The restaurant is relatively spacious with indoor and outdoor dining, and the menu seems fairly extensive.
There wasn’t a crowd when we went (around 11.30am) so our order didn’t take long to arrive. I suspect everything has been pre-steamed as items were served lukewarm, which is a cardinal sin in my opinion, when it comes to eating dim sum.
The siew mai (RM7.50) wasn’t much to shout about – perhaps because of its serving temperature, but it wasn’t juicy nor flavourful. I was told the har kau (RM8.50) is good at Foo Hou Dim Sum, but it wasn’t hot when we got it so the skin was a tad tough to bite into.
I always order spicy dumplings (RM7.50) whenever we have dim sum but this one wasn’t much to shout about as it wasn’t spicy nor tangy enough. The prawn chee cheong fun (RM8.50) fared worse in my opinion as the skin was too thick and stodgy.
Fortunately, the big pau was tasty despite being served at almost room temperature. I reckon this would taste even better when it’s fresh from the steamer. Golden salted egg bun was also alright but of course, being served piping hot would do it more justice.
Almost all the fried items we ordered were disappointing, with the yam puff (RM8.50) being the worst. It was almost room temperature when we got it and there was this stale oil flavour which I assume happened because it’s been sitting in the food warmer for too long.
Deep fried salad prawn (RM8.50) was too thick and tough, and the serving temperature made things worse. I reckon this would have been easily masked if they served it piping hot. The fried prawn roll (RM8.50) was better in terms of taste and texture.
The fried carrot cake (RM8.50) was quite decent – it came with a good amount to chopped preserved vegetables and strong wok hei. Pity the lukewarm temperature though. Foo Hou Dim Sum also serves Portuguese egg tarts but it was mediocre at best for me. Pastry wasn’t flaky enough and the egg custard lacked creaminess.
Overall, our experience was disappointing mostly because of the food temperature. I’m not sure if that’s their modus operandi but they need to do something about their lukewarm items. Service was quick and efficient so that’s a silver lining. Our bill came up to RM135 for all the above – reasonable, but taste is definitely no where near as good as Foo Hing.
